From Fayetteville to Charlotte: A Journey of Resilience
What would you do to escape a crisis?
For Seth, it meant walking away from everything he knew. At just 17 years old, he set out on foot from Fayetteville, North Carolina, in search of safety and a chance at a better future.
After being abandoned by his mother, Seth was left in the care of a violent father. As the youngest child and the only boy in the family, he endured the harshest abuse. Home was not a place of comfort. It was a place of fear. With nowhere else to turn, Seth made the difficult decision to leave. Along the way, he slept in the woods or in shelters when space was available.
Eventually, his journey led him to Charlotte and to The Relatives.
Here, Seth found more than safety. He found support, opportunity, and people who believed in him. With guidance from The Relatives, Seth enrolled in and graduated from an HVAC training program. We helped him secure safe, stable housing and provided rent assistance while he worked toward his certification and career goals.
But Seth’s story doesn’t end with his own success.
Once he found stability, Seth chose to give back. He became a dedicated volunteer, a trusted mentor, and a powerful advocate for other young people facing challenges similar to his own. Through cooking workshops in our teaching kitchen, he shared his passion for food and created opportunities for connection and learning. As a member of our Youth Action Board, he used his lived experience to help shape programs and services for young adults experiencing homelessness.
Today, Seth’s journey is a testament to the power of support, resilience, and community. What began as a walk away from crisis became a path toward purpose, leadership, and hope for others.
